It is feared that many Kenyans contracted Sexually Transmitted Diseases during Christmas Holidays since there is still a shortage of condoms in the country.
This is according to Stanley Ngara alias King of Condom who has been distributing condoms for free to Kenyans for safe sex.
Ngara said this holiday he had only 7,200 that he has been dishing out in various spots in the city among them around Machakos Country bus for those headed to Western and Rift Valley region for holidays.
“Some people will mingle with those from the city and due to excitement they might engage in unprotected sex that is why we also advise them to use prep, a drug in case they are carried away,” he warned.
Ngara said at the moment free condoms are not available in all the distribution points where he and others who supply to public officers usually get them.
He said that has been the case for more than a year now forcing those who cannot afford the costly ones to reuse them like residents who recently confessed to recycling them in Busia County.
“I think there is an increase in condom use among the youth and in some cases sex has been turned into money making ventures by some people who are desperate to feed their families,” he observes.
“There was also the KEMSA scandal and the donor withdrew support for the condom program and high taxation by the government that is why the partners who used to supplement the free supply took off and stopped importing,” he added.
The unprotected sex anti-crusader says at the moment good quality condoms sold in chemists and supermarkets retail between Sh80 and Sh200 which is way too high for ordinary Kenyans.
“Many people would rather risk than spend the little they have on condoms, we call upon the government to prioritise the safety of Kenyans, why leave poor people to recycle condoms,” he added.
During the World Rally Championships in Naivasha he distributed 120,000 protective sheaths to the safari rally fans in 300 days.
According to Ngara, before the condom shortage hit the country, Kenyans were estimated to be using about 400 million condoms in a year.
