A man who was arrested for stealing sweets has been released by the Makadara law courts in Nairobi.
Abel Kiprop, a resident of South B was said to have checked into the Naivas supermarket where he picked a loaf of bread and three packets of sweets.
He then proceeded to the counter to pay for bread only. He was however caught at the exit of the supermarket.
Upon being searched three packets of tropical sweets were found on him before he was escorted to the police station.
When he appeared in court, he pleaded that his intention was to sell the sweets to get bus fare to the village to bury his step mother.
Three packets of tropical sweets were adduced in court as exhibits.
“Someone had promised me to get the fare but it seems to be a hoax. I left my children with my neighbor. I have siblings but we are not on good terms with them,” he pleaded.
“I am humbly requesting the court to be lenient on me to be able to see my children and bury my stepmother. I swear not to repeat the mistake as this was my first time stealing from the supermarket” he added.
The court, having considered his prayer, released him with a warning against shoplifting again.
