Wealthy people who die in Nairobi can now be preserved at the City Mortuary.

The county has announced plans to unveil a private wing at the facility where all collected and unidentified bodies are usually kept.

“In the next 45 days, we intend to unveil a private wing that will be able to hold 24 bodies,” said Tom Nyakaba, chief officer in charge of public health.

The mortuary is the largest government owned parlour equipped with six coolers with a capacity to preserve 200 bodies.

The private wing will also have a chapel with a stationed chaplain whose task will be to lead funeral services to those who are unable to secure a church facility before burying their kin.

“We have engaged a contractor to ensure all coolers are repaired and restored to excellent working condition so as to give proper and dignified services to Nairobians who have lost their loved ones,” Nyakaba noted.

Adding that: “This will ensure those who have lost their loved ones are treated with respect as a mark of last respect.”

The officer assured that the county government will continue beefing up security at the facility by increasing the number of security officers from six to ten.
