Street preachers who have been flocking public parks in Nairobi to preach during lunch hours will now pay County government to spread the Word.

Unlike before when the preachers showed up during lunch hour armed with bibles and loudspeakers, they will now part with up to Sh1000 once the Nairobi City County Finance Bill (2023) takes effect.

Governor Johnson Sakaja already assented to the bill and will take effect in a month’s time.

Once operational, only those preaching at Jee–van–jee will pay Sh500 per day.

Those preaching in other parks within the city will pay a flat rate of Sh1,000 per day to the county government.

Several preachers shifted to the various venues at the city centre after Uhuru Park and Central Park were closed for renovations during the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) regime.

According to the new law, religious organizations intending to hold rallies at Kamukunji grounds will part with Sh20,000 per day.

The development is seen as an attempt to improve revenue collection in the county.

During the presentation of the Sh42.3 billion County budget, Finance County Executive Committee Charles Kerich stated the Sakaja administration aims to improve its revenue from Sh10 billion to Sh19 billion.

According to the finance CEC, the county government will strive to enhance quality and affordable healthcare, deliver school feeding programs, ease movement within the county and provide a clean environment.
