Instead of depending on borrowing money from worshipers and harassing them to offset his bills, a Nairobi pastor has resorted to run a vegetable business commonly known as Kibanda ya mboga
Pastor Joseph Wambugu has been doing this since March 2020 when the first case of Coronavirus was reported in Kenya leading to closure of churches and other places so as to combat the virus.
This led to drop in offerings in many churches thus exposing preachers to economic challenges but Wambugu thought otherwise to survive instead of looking upon his mother Church that used to pay his monthly stipend.
“I decided to sell vegetables because at the end of the day, we have to eat and survive. Soon, I realised I was earning much more from my business than what I used to get from my church salary,” he told local daily..
“I commute to my church for a two-hour service only on Sundays then I come back to my stall. It is sad that many preachers, who used to be paid by their churches, are languishing in poverty because they don’t want to be seen doing such odd jobs,” he added.
The preacher gets produce before heading back to his stall to serve his customers in Nairobi’s Lunga-lunga slums and urges his fellow preachers who pretend to live large, “This has been a wake-up call. One should not shy away from doing any job for living
