Monday’s demonstrations, triggered by a recent hike in fuel prices by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), began peacefully in several towns but quickly descended into chaos in some areas.

Incidents of tire-burning on major highways, confrontations with police, looting of businesses, and attacks on motorists were witnessed.

The protests, largely driven by matatu operators and transport sector players, led to widespread disruption, with four deaths and over 30 injuries reported in various parts of the country.

according to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI 710 suspects across the country were arrested with some who were captured on the footage and photos vandalizing, robbing, stealing and creating disorder are been enlisted on a wanted list for allegedly using protests as cover for serious offences.

Authorities have urged Kenyans to cooperate by providing information that could help identify and apprehend remaining fugitives still at large.

Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen had earlier blamed rogue elements and politicians for inciting violence during the protests.

Meanwhile, human rights groups have called for investigations into reported excessive use of force by police and the deaths that occurred.

The transport sector has since suspended the strike for one week following a partial reduction in diesel prices, but tensions remain high as fuel costs continue to burden ordinary Kenyans.

As investigations continue, the DCI has reiterated its commitment to separating genuine protesters from criminals determined to sow chaos.

The agency stressed that while citizens have a constitutional right to peaceful protest, a significant number of individuals exploited the situation to engage in looting, destruction of property, and other criminal acts.

The DCI issued a strong warning to the public: “Those who choose to engage in unlawful activities during demonstrations will face the full force of the law.”
