Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has revealed that there are ongoing efforts to trace a Kenyan teacher, John Ogutu, who was shot dead during post elections skirmishes in Tanzania.

While appearing during the session on Parliament, Mudavadi said Ogutu, who was a teacher at Sky School in Kinondoni, was shot dead in Goba Centre in Dar-esalaam

At the same time, the Prime CS said that the post election violence did not have a major impact on Kenyan businesses within Tanzania.

“The Kenya high commission with response to Sky school conducted visits to government hospitals and mortuaries in Dar-esalaam to identify the remains of Mr Ogutu. However, the efforts have so far been unsuccessful ” He said.

He noted that since the body is yet to be traced, Kenya has stepped up diplomatic pressure on Tanzania to account for the killing of a Kenyan teacher by writing two letters to his Tanzanian counterpart demanding urgent action and assistance in tracing the victim’s body.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has alerted Tanzanian authorities and formally requested intervention through diplomatic channels.

“I have also written to my counterpart, the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the United Republic of Tanzania, seeking urgent assistance in resolving this matter,” Mudavadi told the House

He added that the teacher’s family had been informed and would continue receiving consular support.

Once the body is found, the government of Kenya would facilitate repatriation back to the country. Moreover, the Tanzanian government has been asked to fast-track investigations.

At the same time, Mudavadi disclosed that between July 2023 and June 2024, a total of 3,503 Kenyans were formally documented by the Tanzanian government.

“448 were student passes, 879 work permits, 370 business registrations, and 1,806 residence permits.
