A deputy Officer Commanding Station (OCS) from Drive-In in Nairobi North Sub-Region and three other officers were arrested on Wednesday in connection with kidnapping with intent to commit a felony.
Police suspect the officers kidnapped a couple in Babadogo and demanded a ransom of Sh1 million.
According to a police report seen by The Standard, the complainants, Kanuti Konrid and Beatrice Naliaka Njoroge, who run an online business, had gone to Babadogo to deliver a watch to a client.
Upon arrival, three men forced them into a waiting vehicle in which two other men were already seated.
“The complainant was handcuffed and the vehicle sped off towards Thika Road. They were taken to Shell Roasters along Thika Road, where they were forced to withdraw money,” the police report states.
The suspects rejected the Sh17,000 the couple managed to withdraw and instead demanded KSh1 million.
They then drove to Equity Bank in Githurai. There, they held the wife hostage in the vehicle and ordered the husband to enter the bank and withdraw the money.
Once inside, the husband alerted a bank teller, who informed police officers guarding the bank. The officers raised an alarm that attracted colleagues on patrol.
“Upon seeing the officers approaching, three suspects fled on foot while the driver sped away with the female victim. The officers fired warning shots into the air and managed to corner and arrest one suspect, Stephen Okello,” the report continues.
Okello was taken to Kasarani Police Station, where he told investigators that five people were involved and that they had used his Toyota Axio.
Further investigations led to the arrest of Kelvin Mwangi, the Drive-In OCS in Kasarani North Sub-Region, together with Oliver Baraza, Job Sidiga and Cyrus Onyango.
Recovered from the suspects were five mobile phones valued at Sh120,000 and one Apple smartwatch valued at Sh2,500.
