Mount Kenya University has made historic step by unveiling special tablets targeting learners in some Kenyan prisons.
The Offline Study Desk prison project is spearheaded by MKU in collaboration with Kenya Prisons Service, UNESCO and among other bodies.
Dr Benson Njoroge, Dean School of Education Mount Kenya University said projects target to evaluate effectiveness of ICT in the delivery of education in prisons without the use of internet
The prisons targeted include Naivasha Maximum, Kamiti, Kisumu Maximum, Langata women, Shimo La Tewa and Nyeri Maximum prison.
The 24 gadgets which ate CDMA disabled are loaded with mathematics, biology, Chemistry and physics for offline Interactive software.
It also allows virtual laboratories for sciences ensure that inmates sitting for KCSE attend practical lessons that are not allowed in prisons.
“The second component of the concept is facilitation of teaching via Mr Signal technology whereby the teaching materials are loaded in the platform that connects with their tablets without using internet” he explained.
Adding that, “Currently the tablets are loaded with 8-4-4 subjects animated materials and the next phase of the project will entail training of the inmates’ teachers with Bachelors of Education”
Mount Kenya University Vice Chancellor Professor Deogratius Jaganyi on his side said that the institution’s three core mandates are teaching, research and community engagement all well-articulated in their 2020-2029 strategic plans.
“We are happy to exercise this mandate at the Kenya Prisons Service where we are working with prisons management and the staff to ensure that the inmates obtain education while serving their terms” stated Jaganyi
