The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has formally approved murder charges in connection with the devastating arson attack at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County on 28 May 2026, marking a significant step toward justice for the victims and their families.

Following a thorough review of the preliminary inquiry file submitted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the DPP in a press release has authorized charges against the implicated students. The suspects now face 16 counts of murder related to the tragic incident.

In a strongly worded statement, the ODPP expressed grave concern over the alarming rise in arson attacks and other criminal acts within educational institutions across the country.

“We wish to issue a firm caution to students and members of the public alike,” the statement read. “Anyone found culpable of such grave offences will be held fully accountable under the law.”

The DPP extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, friends of the victims, and the entire Utumishi Girls Academy community, acknowledging the profound loss and trauma inflicted by this senseless act.

“The Office remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering justice through a fair, impartial, and evidence-based prosecution process,” the statement continued.

The ODPP further reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to upholding the rule of law, safeguarding public interest, advancing the administration of justice, and ensuring that criminal conduct does not go unpunished.

This development brings a measure of accountability to a heartbreaking chapter in Kenya’s education sector, while underscoring the authorities’ resolve to protect learning environments and deter future tragedies. The suspects are yet to take plea.
