In the busy, shadowed neighborhoods of Kasarani, a silent cry for help was finally answered yesterday evening, rescuing a 14-year-old girl from a harrowing situation of forced child marriage.

The victim, referred to here as Maria to protect her identity, was found in the custody of Ahmed Abdikafar Yussuf, an elderly night guard fit to be his grandfather. Reports indicate that the girl had been forced into an illegal marriage arrangement at a very young age.

Geofrey Mosiria responded to a distress call from neighbors who were concerned for the teenager’s welfare after hearing frequent signs of distress coming from the residence that left them wondering what could be happening and if the girl was really his daughter.

Upon her rescue, it was discovered that Maria, who hails from Mandera and has a limited command of Swahili, had become deeply withdrawn.

Further questioning revealed that the illegal union had been facilitated by a family member in direct violation of the law.

During her time in the household, Maria was subjected to isolation while conducting wife duties with the perpetrator allegedly using distorted cultural and religious justifications to defend the arrangement.

Mosiria and his team acted immediately upon receiving the tip. During the confrontation, Yussuf provided a birth certificate of the girl from which the names of the father simply matched with the name on his Identification card something which made the rescue team believe was forged.

Despite initial defiance, the suspect was subdued and taken into custody at Kasarani Police Station. Maria who was unwell was safely escorted to a rescue center where she is currently receiving medical attention, psychological counseling, and protection.

“Children are not objects of exploitation,” stated Mosiria. “Forcing underage girls into marriage denies them their right to education, safety, and a dignified childhood. This practice must stop.”

He further urged the public to abandon harmful practices that rob children of their freedom and safety, emphasizing that children must be allowed to reach adulthood before making decisions regarding marriage.

This rescue serves as a significant reminder that vigilance can save lives, sending a clear message that no child should be sacrificed in the name of tradition.

Through the intervention of the community and local leadership, Maria has been given a chance to reclaim her dignity and her childhood.

Yussuf, is expected to be arraigned in court to face charges.
