Human rights activists have now handed over a list of the people who were reportedly killed during the protests that started sometime in June this year in the office of the President.
The groups led by Vocal Africa and Mukuru Justice centre in partnership with Law Society of Kenya and Active Kenya accompanied some family members of victims.
They presented the list of 60 people who were allegedly killed and 14 others who disappeared under unclear circumstances.
The list was received in the office to the Principal Administrative Officer at the Office of the President.
Majority of the family members said that their kin were killed or disappeared during the first countywide protest in June, 2024.
“This administration entered the government saying that they support young people and we are seeing here that they are cutting young people’s lives short.” Executive director of Siasa Place Nerima Wako noted.
She added that, “Young people only demand for justice, they only are demanding for accountability and now we have here mothers and siblings coming and speaking on behalf of the voices that have been silenced.
Wako regretted that it is more than 60 days now since the first cases were reported yet no action has been taken.
Even so, there were attempts to arrest some activists including Boniface Mwangi, police were overpowered as members of the public gathered outside Harambee House, Nairobi.
Meanwhile, Hussein Khaleed of Haki Africa said that they decided to hand over the list to the Office of the President since the Head of State said that he doesn’t have any list of the protest victims.
“We have made several attempts, not just here at the office of the President, but also at the State House, to try and deliver this list to the presidency,” Hussein noted.
“The list has officially been received by the presidency. On his behalf, Mr. Osia, the principal administrative secretary, told us this list has been received and that he will ensure it gets to the president,” he added.
The human rights activists said they will be back in the same office in seven days’ time for a follow up to know what action has been taken.
