Nairobi County Assembly has ditched a wooden mace and unveiled an 18-carat gold-plated worth Sh30 million.

The new mace was unveiled when MCAs returned from recess on Tuesday sparking excitement from some members.

Members recalled how councillors ran way with the mayor’s golden chain valued at Sh180 million during the defunct council.

“I have officially introduced to you the said mace, which is an art. It is in a designated position for your appreciation,” House Speaker Kennedy Ng’ondi announced.

He described the mace as a state-of-the-art and delicate instrument, representing the civil authority of the county assembly as it conducts its sittings. He said its custodians and handlers would manage it dutifully with care and it will be placed in its position when the county assembly is sitting.

The mace will also be part of the procession whenever the Speaker is entering or leaving the assembly and should also be kept in safe custody by the Sergeant-at-Arms.

Plans by Nairobi County Assembly to acquire an 18 carat gold plated mace started sometime in February amid resistance by some MCAs who observed that it was a costly affair considering some more pressing issues.

The new mace weighing 11kgs has a pointed pyramid design mounted with three solid brass engraved Nairobi county crests visible from either side.
