Former Nairobi County boss Mike Sonko has been Acquitted of terrorism charges that had been leveled against him back in the year 2021 and two others staff of the County.

This was after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) made the application before Kahawa Law Courts Principal Magistrate Daniel Kiage to have the case dropped citing lack of evidence.

In his ruling, Kiage noted that the charges were withdrawn under section 87A of the CPC after considering the merits of the application.
Three years ago, Sonko alongside Clifford Ochieng Ouko and Benjamin Onyango Odhiambo had been charged with the offense of recruiting unknown persons into the acts of terrorism in contravention of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, 2012.

The particulars are that on January 31, 2021, he was found in possession of military attire for the commission or facilitation of a terrorist act.

His co-accused Clifford Ochieng was charged with being in possession of a military combat short of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a Super Sick military Combat Shirt and a pair of military desert camouflage uniform for the commission or facilitation of a terrorist act.

Odhiambo on the other hand was charged with possession of a military camouflage jacket for the commission or facilitation of a terrorist act. They all denied the charges leveled against them.

Following a ruling delivered in court on Wednesday, Sonko declared that he was okay with the outcome and he has forgiven those who accused him of terrorism charges and that he did not wish to file suit for damages.

While addressing the press outside the court, he revealed that his case was politically fueled “During my tenure as the Governor, I was invited to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting in New York. How then could I have been linked with terrorism?” he said.

He further stated that his two co-accused suffered because of his political affiliation.
