More five tonnes of used undergarments have been impounded in Nairobi.
The consignment was part of illegally imported goods nabbed by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) last week.
The authority in a statement said that the 112 bales of used undergarments were found at a warehouse in Syokimau along Mombasa Road.
It is suspected that the inner clothings were imported by a Chinese company and were waiting to be delivered to various markets in the country.
“Importation of used underwear garments is prohibited under the Kenya Standard KS EAS 356:2019: Used Textiles – Requirements for Inspection and Acceptance of Used Textile Products,” the statement reads in part.
“The owners of the warehouse where the goods were impounded will be prosecuted over the importation of the prohibited goods,” the statement further reads.
If found guilty, the offender shall be liable upon conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or to a fine equal to 50 per cent of the dutiable value involved, or both.
“Deployment of robust investigations and intelligence techniques has led to successful interceptions and deterrence of the devious trade across the country,” the statement reads.
At the same time, the authority warned that anyone found culpable of violating tax and customs laws will be charged and the seized products forfeited to the State.
