The most controversial founder and leader of the Holy Ghost Coptic Church of Africa, Father John Juma Pesa has died after a short illness.

Fr. Pesa, in a cult like practices, shocked the nation three years ago when he was accused of mistreating and detaining mentally ill people with the motive to deliver them from the evil spirits

He is reported to have passed away in Kisumu, where his distinctive fortress-like church stands along the busy Kisumu-Kakamega Highway in Mamboleo.

Pesa rose to prominence in the 1970s as one of Kenya’s most polarizing religious figures.

A former Roman Catholic priest, who was reportedly excommunicated or banished from the Catholic Church around 1971 after conducting healings that reportedly displeased church authorities.

He then established the Holy Ghost Coptic Church, laying its foundation stone that same year.

Inside a life marked by devotion and controversy over the decades, Father Pesa built a dedicated following drawn to his teachings, claims of spiritual healing, particularly for mental illness and demonic possession, and his strict, independent approach to faith.

His church became known for its imposing structure and unique practices, attracting both fervent supporters and intense scrutiny.

Pesa’s ministry was often in the headlines for its unorthodox methods. In recent years, authorities and rights groups raised concerns about reports of mentally ill individuals being held in the church premises under the belief that prayer and spiritual intervention could heal them.

Police raids in 2023 uncovered patients in poor conditions and unmarked graves within the compound, which Pesa maintained belonged to nuns who had served the church and were buried with family consent.

He consistently denied allegations of illegal detention, cult-like practices, or mistreatment, insisting that admissions were voluntary with guardian approval and that he helped many recover.

Legal battles followed, including a petition by Kisumu County Government to demolish the church, which was ultimately dismissed by the court. Pesa also faced earlier convictions, such as a 2020 case involving the detention of a minor.

Despite the controversies, supporters viewed him as a powerful spiritual leader with a charismatic presence, humor, and a deep commitment to his calling.

Some accounts note he claimed a divine mission from a young age, including visions from the Virgin Mary.

Details about the exact cause of death remain limited, with reports linking it to complications related to old age. A funeral committee has been formed, and plans for his burial are underway.

Father John Juma Pesa’s passing marks the end of an era for one of Kenya’s most enigmatic independent churches.

While his methods divided public opinion, his influence on Kenya’s diverse religious landscape, particularly in western Kenyaremains undeniable.

His church and followers now face an uncertain future without their long-time leader.
