At 23, Joy Karuna has been blessed with triplets, two boys and one girl, bundles of joy that anyone would wish for. They are now about a month old.
Today, she is supposed to be at home taking care of the babies, but she won’t, Joy is detained at Kenyatta Hospital at Kahawa over a bill that keeps ballooning.
Currently the hospital bill stands at over Sh400,000, a huge amount which she cannot afford.
That is not the only pain weighing her down, the mother of triplets was unwell, battling life-threatening when she checked in the facility to deliver. This is a story of the pain of a young mother in unforgiving society.
Joy sat for her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education last year and scored a B that would have allowed her to join university but as fate would have it, she became a mother.
Her husband sells ice-cream in the nearby estate for survival and is also unable to clear the bill and take his wife home but he frequently joins her in the hospital bed.
There is something that keeps Joy jovial woman despite monstrous challenges, medics told her she can be treated.
“Yes, that’s what keeps me going but my wish is to get help, to pay the bills and go home with the babies, to raise them and continue with my studies,” she appealed
