A middle-aged man remains stranded on his farm in the Maguguni area of Thika for the third consecutive day.
This is after sudden heavy rainfall caused sections of the Athi River to overflow, leaving him isolated between two powerful, swollen channels of floodwater.
The man according to the locals had crossed a shallow section of the river to tend to his farm when water levels were low.
However, intense rains in the upstream catchment areas triggered raging flooding, turning the location into a precarious island surrounded by strong currents on both sides.
With no access to food or a safe escape route, the man’s condition is becoming increasingly critical. Drone footage captured by Paxson TV shows the visibly distressed man raising his hands and signaling desperately for help.
Attempts by the locals to rescue him with boats have proven to be futile since the water currents moves rapidly.
The locals have appeal to National Police Service Air Wing, the Kenya Red Cross Society, Kiambu County emergency services, and local leaders to deploy a helicopter to evacuate the man before the floodwaters rise further or he succumbs to exhaustion and starvation.
This latest incident highlights the persistent dangers posed by flash flooding along the Athi River during the current rainy season, which has affected multiple areas across Kiambu, Machakos, and surrounding counties.
As of April 30, 2026, the man is still trapped, with rescue efforts yet to be successfully executed.
