Several people were injured on Friday (20/3/2026) at Gesagero village in Kisii County after two women fought over who would bury their husband.

According to a police report made at Kegogi police station, the two women, Alice Kemunto and Esther Otondo Moriasi were married to Joseph Moriasi who passed away recently aged 56.

When their husband died, the women filed a case in court seeking a directive on where and who will bury the husband between the two wives.

After burial preparation, it is stated that the man’s body was transported home on Friday for burial after court directed that the wives should agree where to bury the body.

It was then that the family agreed that the man should be buried at the home of the first wife thus the body was transported to the village ready for interment.

But according to police, on the material day, it is alleged that the second wife came with a group of unknown rowdy youths who were armed with crude weapons.

“They intercepted the hearse then went ahead and buried the body in the home of the second wife and set ablaze the house of the deceased’s brother,” the police statement reads in part

Adding that, “nothing was saved in the house and property of unknown value were reduced to ashes, they also stole one cow belonging to the family,”

During the fracas, police stated that several people sustained injuries and were rushed to Kegogi hospital where they were treated and others referred to Kisii referral hospital.
