Central Organisation of Trade Unions secretary general Francis Atwoli has been re-elected unopposed as the secretary general of the Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers Union for another five-year term.
Atwoli was first elected as General Secretary of KPAWU in 1994 where he has served to date.
In elections that were held at the Tom Mboya Labour College, Kisumu on Saturday, the planter’s union said Atwoli was suited to serve their interests.
Welcoming the confirmation, Atwoli said the transformed mandate confirmed the union’s trust in his stewardship and pledged to continue advancing workers’ welfare.
In a statement, Atwoli said the re-election underscored his commitment to safeguarding workers’ interests and improving their livelihoods.
“I wish to affirm my commitment towards advancing worker’s interests and improving their welfare,” he said.
Atwoli pledged to continue to prioritize gratuity as a key and central component of workers’ benefits.
“As a union we have a duty to protect the Employment of our members or workers in general and no single day shall we accept our members to be replaced by the Mechanization and shears apparatus in the Tea sector, Floriculture and Horticulture and Coffee sectors,” he added
Since 1994 KPAWU has grown from less than 20,000 members into one of the largest trade unions in the region with a membership of over 650,000 workers across the plantation and agricultural sectors.
