A 41-year-old house help who was arrested for stealing a baby was arraigned in court but will remain in custody for more days.

The accused person Catherine Kerubo Masi is said to have counter trafficked the new born E.B. by taking her away from from her mother and the complainant Emily Mosweta by means of deception on  May 26 at Tea room bus stage.

Mosweta who worked as a shoe shiner within Nairobi CBD had checked into Mimosa Hospital after experiencing labour pains. She successfully delivered her child and she was discharged the following day

That day, the accused person Masi had  tagged along her friend to go and help the complainant clear the bill and take her home. On their way to Umoja bus stage, the accused who had carried the baby immediately disappeared to unknown place.

The complainant tried to look for her to see if  perhaps she might have missed the track but she was nowhere to be seen. He phone had been switched off.

In desperate to find the new born, the complainant searched for the accused person in vain till late evening when she decided to report the matter at Buruburu police station as directed.

Investigations revealed that Masi had travelled to Kisii on the fateful day with the infant and went to the homestead belonging to an elderly couple. The couple did not know her . She asked fro a glass of water and she was given before being shown the washroom where she relieved herself then disappeared without a trace.

She left the little angel in the hands of the unsuspecting couple. Minutes turned into hours and later days. The couple not knowing where she had gone with intentions of leaving the baby in their custody, the couple reported the case of abandoned baby to the local authorities at Masimba children’s department.

Devastated with uncertainties of her baby’s whereabouts, complainant painfully hoped that her newborn was okay and in good hands.

With the help of investigating Erustus Kioko, the investigating officer told the court that he arrested Masi at her hideout in Mombasa County, Nyali Sub-County in Mjambere area following an intelligence report on June 6. She led the police to the homestead where she had abandoned the baby.

The minor was rescued on June 8. She was found sleeping on the bed belonging to the old lady.

She denied the accusation when she was charged and the court under Kitagwa’s directive ruled that the accused should remain in custody pending pre-bail report which should be tabled in court on June 30th.
