Boniface Kariuki, the hawker who was shot at close range during Tuesday’s demonstrations in Nairobi, has been taken back to theatre to undergo another surgery at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

According to the latest update by the family the Kariuki was wheeled to the theatre around 2 pm for another operation to save his life.

“He is not in good condition, the doctors said the bullet pierced through his brain, and it has been swelling over time,” said one of his colleagues

Adding that, “The doctors said the procedure is to try and create a space around the skull to prevent the swelling, we are still praying that he will come out of the danger,”

Yesterday, Kenyatta National Hospital CEO William Sigilai said the patient was on mechanical ventilation as medics kept close observation after it was the bullet struck Kariuki on the left side of the head.

He was wheeled to the theatre and undergo the first surgery on Tuesday night in a delicate operation where a bullet was successfully removed.

Kariuki was shot during protests in Nairobi demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat over the death of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang’.

In a viral video, two anti-riot police officers were seen assaulting a trader along Kimathi Street before one of them shoved him aside and shot him in the head. Immediately, the officers left the scene, well-wishers picked Kariuki and rushed him to Bliss hospital in critical condition for first aid. He was later moved to Kenyatta National Hospital.
