Ever since September 20,2010 when Mike Mbuvi Sonko trounced his opponents to win the Makadara MP seat, his volunteering deeds and desire to help personality have remained unmatched.
Not a single year will wind up without the former Nairobi Governor extending his helping hand to the needy.
Many thought that his humanitarian activities would end following his impeachment from office.
He has however taken it a notch higher, proving those who thought he was doing it for political mileage.
He once had the Sonko Rescue Team that responded to issues in Nairobi but also in Machakos, Kericho and other counties.
One of the biggest humanitarian cases involved his intervention in Baby Sagini’s treatment, including medical bills after his eyes were gouged out in Kisii. The incident that happened in December 2022 left so many Kenyans in shock.
“I have conducted thorough research on which is the best hospital that can at least attend to Baby Sagini’s emergency case and found a hospital in Shenzhen, South China called Dennis Lam Eye Hospital, which does eye implants,” Sonko said on his Social Media posts.
His help did not end there as he further went ahead to declare a Sh200, 000 reward for any person who volunteered information that may led to the arrest of the key suspects in the case.
The former Governor also came in handy to help Kenya’s Boxing star Conjestina Achieng through rehab and other life changing interventions. The former boxer was going through turbulent times as the public watched helplessly.
The former boxer who may still be experiencing minor challenges successfully cleared her rehab and was even helped to secure employment.
At the moment,Sonko has with him the Osinya boys, Satrina and Gift have been part of his family since 2014 after he adopted them.
Satrin Osinya is a grade 7 pupil at St. Mary’s school here in Nairobi. This the same school former President Uhuru Kenyatta went to while his brother is at Scots University in Kenya.
It is just recently when Sonko expressed his fatherly love towards his newly adopted son, James whom he treated to an epic and memorable experience at Lake Naivasha Resort to celebrate a historic milestone in the history of football.
As if that is not enough, the former Governor was quick to act and intervene in a case where three Kenyans tragically passed away in an inferno at an apartment building in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on April 13.
He explained that it might cost around Ksh200,000 to bring each body back to Kenya, according to the quotation he received.
In a video shared on Tuesday, April 22, Sonko showed a screen recording of an email from a manager from the leading airline in Dubai explaining the costs and requirements involved in transporting the bodies back to Kenya.
Initially the rate of humanitarian (HUM) from Dubai to Nairobi (DXB – NBO) and the requirements needed to forward as per Sonko were slated at the discounted rate of AED 37.45/kg (Ksh1,322) plus (FSC AED 3.20 & AED 0.40), which was 140 per cent of the International Airline Travel Agent Network (IATA N) rate for the subject HUM shipment from DXB to Nairobi for Kenyan nationality.
However Sonko consulted the Principal Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development Teresia Mbaika and the two managed to secure an extra discount of AED 30/KG plus FSC AED 3.20 and AED 0.40.
There will also be additional local handling charges of Ksh 1000.
By Wednesday evening, the embassy in UAE had processed documents for two bodies.
The media fraternity has also been grateful to Sonko once again came to the aid of ex-TV journalist Kimani Mbugua, following reports that he had relapsed and returned to the streets.
Sonko dispatched a team to locate Mbugua, who was found in Makongeni estate, Thika, Kiambu County.
“He was brought to our headquarters, where we are currently overseeing his well-being after providing him with new clothing and allowing him to take a refreshing shower,” Sonko stated.
Kenyans who follow the former Governor now believe that he deserves more local and international recognition.
“This man deserves a global award if we can’t get him one locally,” a social media user called Mary Njoroge commented on a news post on X space.
Absolomon Mainga said: “ He deserves to be named the national hero of the year in this year’s Mashujaa Day,”
In December 2019,Sonko bagged the World Peace Messenger Award from the World Peace and Diplomacy Organization in Los Angeles, US.
He was awarded for his efforts in reaching out to the less fortunate and his commitment to reform youths associated with criminal groups.
In February 2019,Sonko was appointed the Good Deeds Ambassador by an Israel-based organization for his generosity in helping the needy.
An Israel delegation, led by Good Deeds Global Chief Executive officer Kaynan Rabino, had already promised to name him their Good Deeds Ambassador for a three-year period.
He was feted in a ceremony attended by Israel Ambassador to Kenya Noah Gal Gendler at Hilton Hotel, Nairobi.
This year,he has already been recognised as the East African Humanitarian Personality of the Year for his support to vulnerable groups.
