“Si Ruto Alishukisha?” : New Unga Prices shock Kenyans

Kenyans will now be forced to dig deeper into their pockets so as to enjoy their favourite plate of Ugali.

In unexpected development, prices of the maize flour have gone up in a move that has shocked many.

A spot check by Nairobi Journal has established that two kilograms of cooking flour have gone up but at least Sh30.

Last week, leading brands were retailing between Sh110 and Sh119, but the prices, according to the supermarkets, shot up on December 1.

Some of the popular brands that have increased the prices to Sh145 include Jogoo, Soko, and Pembe, while new entrants in the market sell their brands by sh15 less.

“I was shocked when I checked in Naivas Nakuru only to notice the price difference from my last shopping,” Leah Ochieng told Nairobi Journal.

She added, “I was planning to buy five packets, but I was forced to buy only three so that I could buy other things,”

This was the case in Nairobi and other towns, residents complaining of the increase during the festive season.

“It is unfortunate that the prices have gone up during the festive season when children are home on a long holiday,” Anthony Macharia, resident of Dandora in Nairobi, said.

“It seems all along the government has been lying about cushioning the common mwaainchi, my appeal goes to President Ruto, what is happening to the promises that you made…not to expose us to hard life?,”Macharia added.

For over two years now, President Ruto has been telling Kenyans that the price of two kilograms of unga has dropped to Sh100.

More worrying is that most of the farmers in the Rift-valley are harvesting the maize, making it hard to understand why a sharp increase in prices
