In the spirit of taking care of Kenyan citizens a young woman from Chwele in Bungoma County, identified as Naliaka, has received substantial financial support from the Linda Mwananchi movement after she hugged a tree for more than 17 hours in a striking show of solidarity.
The gesture took place as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi team travelled to Bungoma for Sifuna’s homecoming rally on Sunday, July 26, 2026.
Naliaka remained clinging to the tree, determined to welcome and greet the senator, while highlighting economic hardships facing many families in the area.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, addressing the gathering, noted that she was unemployed, her parents struggled financially, and the family lived in poverty. He described her action as rooted in those challenges.
Upon discovering her, leaders including Babu Owino urged Sifuna to “release” her from the prolonged stand. Sifuna called her forward, saying, “Naliaka, Wachilia mti sasa ukuje unisalimie hapa”
With all the humility, Naliaka approached, a flag wrapped around her head, and was greeted amid cheers. Sifuna directed his security detail to protect her and thanked her for the support.
The team then organized an impromptu collection. Contributions came from several politicians present, including, residents and aspiring leaders also contributed the funds which surpassed 120, 000 Naliaka was subsequently taken along to Bungoma as part of the homecoming activities.
The Linda Mwananchi team termed the contribution as recognition of her commitment rather than simple charity.
