Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has been put on the spotlight by a section of County Assembly Members over the tendering process and source of funding of the ongoing beautification at the city centre.
The beautification that has seen several walkways excavated and replaced with cabro stones has been going on for several months now.
While governor Sakaja has turned the city centre face-lift into his pet project, some MCAs claim this could be a cash cow for the executive.
On July 21, former mayor Godfrey Majiwa who is the current Babadogo MCA through a statement sought to understand how the project is funded and who is behind the multi-million shillings tender.
“While the project is expected to improve the environment and facilitate economic activities, there is public interest regarding the procurement process, scope of works, project timelines, value of the money,” Majiwa stated in his request of statement from relevant committee
Adding, “It is imperative that the county assembly exercises its oversight role to ensure that public resources are utilised prudently, that the project is implemented in accordance with the approved specifications, timelines and applicable laws,”
In the statement, Majiwa said the Committee should inquire into and report on one, a detailed report on the name of the contractor undertaking the carbon pavement works within the Nairobi Central Business District and the procurement method used in awarding the contracts.
He added that a comprehensive report on the scope of works under the contracts, including the roads, streets, pedestrian walkways covered, including showing the approved contracts and the source of the money for the project.
“A report on the commencement date and the expected completion date and the current implementation status of the project. And finally, the measure being undertaken by the county executive to ensure the timelines, completion of the project within the framework of construction to business and public utilities,” Majiwa added
