Police in Kasarani are investigating how a mutura seller lost over Sh400, 000 to a customer who allegedly borrowed a phone from him.
It is alleged that the complainant accepted a request by the customer to use his for only to realise that his money had been transferred to different mobile numbers in possible sim-swap fraud.
A detective investigating the case while appearing at Makadara Law courts sought orders to allow Safaricom to reveal the details of the mobile phone numbers that the money was forwarded to l.
The officer, Francis Mutie, via sworn affidavit, told the court that the complainant identified as Sammy Wamwati Nyathira reported the case on 3rd June 2026.
The officer stated that on June 2, a female customer approached Wamwati, who runs mutura base in Githurai, and claimed that he wanted to buy a full goat head but did not have enough money.
For this reason, she requested Wamwati for his mobile phone so that she could call her husband to pay for the goat head.
To win his trust, it is stated that the suspect shared his contact that was displayed on his base, and then someone called and identified himself the woman’s husband.
At this point, more customers came, and Wamati handed over his phone to the suspect, who reportedly removed his Simcard and handed back the phone.
The businessman realised that something was wrong when he could not hear payment messages ringing and upon calling Safaricom, he was told that his business line was switched off and at the time the female customer who had borrowed his phone had left.
More shocking was that Sh416,850 had been transferred to a different mobile numbers forcing him to report the case.
Thus, the officer told the court he wanted the network operator to share the details so that it could help in trailing the money.
