Police in Nairobi are investigating a bizarre discovery after a man was found dead in a sitting position inside a sewer manhole in Kawangware early Thursday morning.
The body was spotted shortly after 7 a.m. by plumber who had been contacted by a landlady to unblock the sewer line along a drainage line in the densely populated Kawangware area.
According to initial reports, the unidentified man, believed to be in his 40s, was sitting upright on a narrow concrete ledge inside the manhole, fully clothed, with his back against the wall and legs stretched out.
“He looked peaceful, like he was waiting for a bus or something,” one worker told police.
Emergency responders confirmed the man had been dead for several hours. No visible signs of injury or foul play were immediately apparent.
The cause of death is yet to be determined pending a full autopsy. Police have cordoned off the area and are treating the case as a suspicious death while they try to establish the man’s identity and how he ended up inside the manhole.
