If you are reading this now, you must have heard William Ruto, Kenya’s Fifth President talking about Singapore.

In what has become a common slogan, President Ruto said his administration’s target is to move Kenyans to the same class in terms of development.

Many people have been making fun of this dream but did you know that in Singapore there are strict rules that Kenyans may not be able to adhere to if they were to be facilitated to Singapore.

According to various online sources poligamy is illegal in Singapore under civil law but legally permitted for Muslim men under specific religious and administrative conditions.

For non-Muslims, the women’s charter mandates monogamy. Marrying more than one wife is a criminal offense known as bigamy.

Individuals found guilty of bigamy can face up to 7 years in prison and a fine of up to S$10,000.

On March 9, 2026 CNA, an online platform reported that a man identified as Ong Hiap Leong, a 58-year-old Singaporean, was sentenced to jail for two months and two weeks.

Even though his wife was still alive, Leong married a second woman but when they fell out, the second wife lodged a police report against the man for bigamy.
