In a heartfelt statement amid widespread flooding across Nairobi and other regions of Kenya, President William Ruto has expressed profound sympathy for affected families while outlining the government’s comprehensive response to the crisis.
The floods have inflicted severe hardship, including tragic fatalities of more than 20, people, mass displacement, and extensive damage to homes, infrastructure, and economic activities.
President Ruto extended his deepest condolences to those who have lost loved ones, emphasizing that the nation’s thoughts and prayers are with all individuals whose lives have been upended by the disaster.
“The Government stands in solidarity with every citizen affected,” he stated, underscoring a commitment to rapid intervention aimed at mitigating further suffering and protecting vulnerable populations.
To bolster rescue and relief operations, the President has mandated the swift deployment of a multi-agency emergency response team.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration in collaboration with the Kenya Defence Forces and other specialized agencies, will oversee coordinated efforts to evacuate residents from high-risk areas, provide on-ground support to impacted communities, and ensure the safety of those in immediate peril.
In a bid to address urgent humanitarian needs, President Ruto has, “authorized the immediate release and distribution of relief food supplies from Kenya’s national strategic reserves. This measure is designed to sustain families grappling with food insecurity due to the floods.”
Furthermore, “the government has pledged to cover all medical expenses for individuals injured or affected by the flooding who are receiving treatment in public health facilities.”
Additional emergency aid will be channeled to displaced households to alleviate their hardships during this challenging period.
Highlighting the importance of intergovernmental cooperation, President Ruto noted that, “the national administration is partnering closely with the Nairobi City County Government and other county authorities to prioritize citizen safety and well-being, ensuring that resources are deployed efficiently across affected regions.”
Beyond immediate relief, the President acknowledged the floods as a stark reminder of the persistent vulnerabilities in Kenya’s urban landscapes.
“These events underscore the urgent need for enduring solutions to recurrent flooding,” he remarked. Central to this strategy is the ongoing Nairobi River Regeneration Programme, which focuses on revitalizing river ecosystems, enhancing drainage infrastructure, and minimizing flood-related risks in the capital.
President Ruto affirmed that these initiatives will be intensified and expedited as part of the government’s broader dedication to safeguarding lives, property, and the environment.
As rescue operations continue and recovery efforts gain momentum, President Ruto’s address serves as a call for national resilience and proactive environmental stewardship, aiming to build a more flood-resistant future for Kenya.
