All the families that lost their loved ones in the landslide that occurred in Elgeyo Marakwet early November will get a token of Sh200, 000 from the government.
This was announced by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday during the requiem mass for eight victims of the landslide at Kapchebau, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
About 40 people lost their lives in the mudslide that hit several villages including Chesongoch, Ksegei and Kwenoi.
“All the affected families that lost their loved ones will get a token of Sh200,000 from the government while those who got injured will get Sh100,000,” said Murkomen noting that other hospital bills will be sorted by the state
Adding that, “It was noted in the security council that going forward that the country prepares in a multi-agency manner to ensure disaster response is expedited so as to save lives,”
At the same time the CS noted that during a security council chaired by the President Ruto on November 18, a directive was given to the Ministry of Interior and defense.
This, he said will ensure that the air assets remain serviceable so that the air support from the police will be expedited.
Notably, several police helicopters were dispatched to the county as part of emergency reinforcement.
“I want to assure the people of Kenya that just the way we did the response here, going forward the National security council has given a directive that our helicopters and planes and police must be ready all the time so as to save lives like they did in Marakwet,”Murkomen stated
