The peaceful March from JKIA to Kasarani stadium suddenly turned wild moments after the body of the Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga arrived at the rerouted stadium.
The disruption led to chaos erupting on on Thursday afternoon when thousands of supporters of the late former Prime Minister Odinga attempted to forcefully access the VIP staging area where his body was being held for public viewing.
A seemingly angered and discontent he crowd got impatient and tired of waiting. They then started pushing and breaking seats, and hurling chairs and stones at the security guards who were manning the said area.
The disorderly crowd forced police officers to fire in the air and lob teargas canisters at the thousands of people who had gathered at the stadium. The crowd was seen scampering for their safety and two people have been seriously injured.
In the process it is alleged that two people were shot dead.
The National Youth Service officers (NYS) swung into action to administer first medical attention. The footage showed clouds of smoke billowing across the field as some people tried to take cover by shielding themselves as security personnel moved in to restore order.
The situation got out of hand as people ran away from the stadium which for a moment the once filled stadium was clear with the leaders only remaining.
For close to two hours since arrival of Raila’s body at the stadium, there has been commotions and running battles of mourners who were later allowed back to the stadium with the exercise kicking off two hours later. dignitaries led by President William Ruto led mourners in body viewing.
On the other hand, Raila’s elder brother Obiru Oginga Odinga arrived at his homestead to open the house to mourners according to Luo traditions so as to break the news to the residents and the extended family.
