It is not yet over for Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja, a civil society group has now initiated a process of collecting the signatures in Nairobi.
The group known as Kenya Bora Tuitakayo says this will be another way for sending the governor home after the Members of County Assembly were forced to drop their planned impeachment motion.
At the same time the group has described the move by President Ruto and ODM Leader Raila Odinga to save Sakaja as selfish and a betrayal to city residents.
The group claimed that since September, 2022, when the new administration took over, there has been a looting spree, not that the best way to was to involve Nairobi residents through collection of signatures to push for the dissolution of Nairobi County government.
They accuse Governor Sakaja’s administration of corruption and failure to offer quality services.
“We shall immediately consult Nairobians in all the 17 constituencies and 85 wards on the need to collect signatures to dissolve the county government in toto. It is time to send the Governor, his deputy, and all the MCAs home,” said spokesperson, Cyprian Nyamwamu.
“We particularly call upon Senator (Edwin) Sifuna to support this initiative of rescuing Nairobi from the cruel and corrupt Sakaja regime.”
At the same time, the group said the move by President Ruto and Raila to halt the impeachment Motion was not for the benefit of Nairobi residents but for their own interests.
The lobby group, whose leadership also includes lawyer Harun Ndubi, stated that they had commissioned an audit on the county government, claiming it was insolvent.
They noted that while the 2023/2024 budget stood at Sh42.2 billion, pending bills had shot up to Sh118 billion.
“To settle this debt, NCCG has to shut down for three financial years, collecting taxes from Kenyans without service delivery. In simple terms, NCCG is insolvent,” they stated.
“If indeed the Governor and MCAs prudently spent approximately Sh160.6 billion, Nairobians would have the best facilities ever. Based on these brief findings, we conclude that more than three-quarters (Sh120 billion) have been defrauded, and hence the need for a fraud Audit.”
The group accused ODM and UDA leadership of being part of the conspiracy to defraud the city residents, and therefore the need to save Sakaja from impeachment.
The lobby said it would work with the Office of the Auditor General in conducting the audit.
“We call upon Nairobians in all the 85 wards to take their Nairobi back from the regime by supporting dissolution. Dissolution is the only way because we have seen how money has made impeachment impossible,” they stated.
