There were no protests in Kibera slums as GenZ protests rocked other parts of Nairobi on June 25, 2025 to mart the first anniversary.

Unlike before, people in the larger slums continued with their normal activities with majority saying that “sisi iko kwa sirkal’.

“People are going on with their activities because there is nothing to protest about, we usually wait for communication from ODM leader Raila Odinga but he did not tell us to go to the streets,” said Janet Akinyi

She added, ” the demonstrations are not about Raila but the GenZ who were killed last year, when he (Raila) is happy the slums is calm, at the moment he is in government and happy,”

Another resident Jacob Ochieng said perhaps tough economic times have pushed the majority to focus on their activities instead of joining protests.

“Many people in the slums survive from hand to mouth, so if you waste the whole day protesting, you will go back home without food,” he said

“I think the group that used to lead protests in the slums have since moved on after fighting with police for many years. Most of the young people in the slums who have been witnessing the clashes don’t want to be involved,” added Ochieng.
