Police in Nairobi have sought more time to investigate a woman who allegedly stabbed her co-wife in the stomach, resulting in her death days later.
Juliana Mwende was arraigned under miscellaneous applications seeking that she remains in custody for 14 days to allow detectives to complete investigations.
It is alleged that Mwende, in a fit of rage, stabbed her co-wife Caroline Mutuku on March 16 in stomach following a domestic dispute.
The matter was reported at Reuben Police station by Mwai Ndunda, who is stated as their husband.
In an affidavit filed in court, the officer stated that after the incident, Mutuku was treated at a nearby hospital and discharged.
The following day, her husband took her for further treatment at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, but she was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she died, leading to Mwende’s arrest.
The weapon which she allegedly used was recovered and she was transferred to Industrial area Police station.
While asking the court for more time, the officer told the court Mwende was supposed to undergo mental examination and that the recovered knife was supposed to be taken for tests at the government chemist.
The detective said he needed more time to record statements from witnesses in the neighbourhood where the incident happened adding that he was also afraid that if Mwende was released, angry residents could harm her.
Following the prayers, the officer was allowed 14 days to remand Mwende until the investigations are complete. The matter will be mentioned on April 7.
