Sometime last year, a video of Collins Leitich, alias Chepkulei, emerged on social media. In the short clip the man was captured alighting from a black Toyota V8.
Four men in suits and dark specs jumped out of the vehicle like bodyguards and escorted him to what looked like an exclusive resort where he held a conversation with someone in a gazebo.
Maybe it was recorded for social media but the video resurfaced after Chepkulei was reported to have single-handedly establishing a police patrol base at Cherus trading centre in Uasin Gishu County.
Since then flashy Chepkulei has became a man of interest after he was linked to the “police facility” with Kenyans wondering how a private citizen managed to establish a government installation without the knowledge of the authorities.
Away from police base controversy, Chepkulei’s life has been thrust into the limelight with many struggling to understand the man who claims to have deep connections in government.
Branded as the first Kenyan to own a “police station”, Chepkulei’s name has remained on the lips of many with Netizens mining and sharing his photos some in the company of pretty women in clubs and public functions.
A quick look at his social media pages’ reveals that he is a man who enjoys fine things in life. When not posing next to big machines, Chepkulei is captured in exquisite entertainment spots.
“What you have seen circulating is something from the past. I was still a teenager and they are now bringing the memories back. They are bringing the past. In fact, nowadays I go to church,” he said in response to a question about photos circulating on the internet
Chepkulei is surprised at the heat generated by his “act of generosity”, maintaining that the project was meant to help curb insecurity at the local shopping centre on the highway.
“The patrol base was not functional as claimed, and it was meant for the good of the community. Cherus shopping centre is along the highway and cases of insecurity have been on the rise,” he said.
The man claims he set up the post after meeting with community elders who helped in identifying a building where the facility would be set up.
He is, however, reluctant to share how he makes his money only saying: “I run some of my businesses away from the country, Asia to be precise.”
