A day after 170 people were hospitalized in Kericho County after consuming Kalenjin traditional milk known as Mursik, it has now emerged the milk was not safe for consumption.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the milk vendor had added excessive yeast to hasten fermentation.
The incident happened in Lel Sotet, Masaita, and Kabianga areas in Kipkelion East constituency on Sunday.
Most of those affected are members of the Church of Christ congregation in Londiani Ward. The incident occurred during a church gathering to celebrate the graduation of pastors, where 20 litres of the milk had been served.
At the time, it is said that the patients were exhibiting symptoms of food poisoning, including severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
A witness said the milk had been purchased to celebrate the occasion but after consuming the milk, some members complained of stomach aches, followed by vomiting and diarrhoea.
In response to the incident, the church suspended its regular services and held a special prayer session for the victims at the hospital.
