Hatuitaki  Tena! : Let’s Do Away With The Name ‘Kenya’

As Kenya continues to evolve, it’s worth considering a name that represents the unity and diversity of our entire nation, rather than one rooted in a single region.

The name “Kenya,” derived from Mount Kenya, holds significant historical and cultural value, but it primarily reflects the heritage of the central region that is why you keep hearing that Sisi watu wa Murima fought Colonialists and Won in Mau Mau War and that Hawa hapana tiwa Uwoga.

Our country is far more than just one landmark—it’s a rich mosaic of over 40 ethnic groups and 47 counties, each contributing to our national identity.

Renaming Kenya would be a meaningful step towards inclusivity, ensuring that every Kenyan, from the coast to the highlands, and from the plains to the lakes, feels equally represented in our national identity. It would be a unifying symbol, honoring our collective heritage and diverse cultures.

Nations like Burkina Faso, which changed its name from Upper Volta, and Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, have made similar moves to reflect their broader identities, moving away from regional or colonial labels.

Moreover, a new name would help Kenya shed the remnants of its colonial past, allowing us to craft an identity that truly reflects the spirit and aspirations of our people.

Just as Eswatini redefined itself by embracing its indigenous identity, Kenya can take this opportunity to create a name that resonates with all its citizens.

This change would be a bold and unifying step forward, strengthening our national identity and ensuring that all Kenyans feel included in the country’s future.#
