Nairobi County Speaker Kennedy Ngo’ndi has said that he regrets forcing MCA from the Muslim community to hug and greet him by hand.
In the viral video, the Speaker Ng’ondi was captured coercing nominated MCA Fatuma Abbey to stand up and shake his hands despite her protest.
The clip has not only created heated debate online but also uproar from Kenyans and Muslim organisations at large.
This forced the Speaker to seek a meeting with Muslim Leaders in Nairobi so that he can be forgiven.
Ng’ondi stated that he made a request to meet Muslim organisations so that he can apologise to the family of the nominated MCA.
“My actions have brought a lot of unrest within my family and I really regret my actions. I thank the Muslim community for accepting to meet me so that I can make my apology,” Ng’ondi stated.
He added that, “to my sister Fatma, kindly find heart to forgive for my actions, I came to realize that it is bad manners to the Muslim faithful’s,”
Ng’ondi defended himself stating that the video was taken out of context and that he had apologised to the family of the nominated MCA.
He added that the video was taken sometime in 2022 when female MCAs treated him for a surprise birthday party.
“The apology given to the Speaker has been accepted by the Muslim Leadership who attended the meeting and have forgiven the speaker,” National Muslim Leaders Forum chairman Abdi Abdullahi stated.
He added that “there are some issues that must be addressed, the issue of dignity of Muslim women is very close to the community globally.”
Abdullahi said the video has gone round the world and has received a lot of responses citing the Speaker has received some threats.
“We want this to be a lesson for others, as Muslim community, we want our daughters and our women to be respected, they have got a dress code and it must be respected from school to place of work,” the chairman noted.
“That is not reservation to Muslim women but to every woman in the society. Women should be respected. We should not see a repeat of this incident that took place in this country,” he added.
