Sharon Chepkirui, the lady who was in the same car with Kelvin Kiptum when the tragic accident occurred has spilled the beans.
The accident involving World marathon holder occurred on February 11, 2024 around 11pm while he, Chepkirui were driving along Eldoret-Kaptagat road when the crash occurred on the fateful night.
According to The Standard Newspaper, Chepkirui who survived the accident has since recorded her statement detailing what transpired.
It is stated that Chepkirui told police that she had been Kiptum’s friend since the beginning of January.
On the fateful day, she told police that they watched an English Premier League together with Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizamana in Eldoret town.
Kiptum’s coach did not survive the accident.
Reportedly, the three had also enjoyed a meal and were heading to Chepkorio where the athlete trains.
In her statement, she told investigators that the athlete might have dozed off at the time of the accident.
A postmortem report indicated that the coach died of multiple injuries to the head.
Kiptum shot to fame after breaking the marathon world record in Chicago last year.
He has been eulogised as an athlete with exceptional talent who was destined for greatness. His burial is slated for February 24, 2024.
