Why Government Wants CCTV Cameras To Be Installed In Lodgings, Airbnbs

In an attempt to address the rising cases of deaths around lodgings and house set ups commonly known as airbnbs, a government security agency has directed for installation of cctv cameras around such premises.

The Private Security Regulatory Authority has now directed Managers of Private Security companies, security guards and all Private security services providers that this ought to be adhered to.

In statement, the Authority’s Chief Executive Officer Fazul Mahamed said this was arrived at following the alarming cases or murders around criminal activities within residential apartments.

The authority said target places that ought to comply with the directive include those affiliated online accommodation, lodging, and platforms such as airbnb.

“A security guard or a security officer, the private security service provider, security guard or or officer shall require person to identify themselves, register the time of entrance and exits of the person,” the directive says.

The security officers will also be required to temporarily retain the identification documents of guests checking into the lodgings and airbnbs.

At the same time, the security officers have been directed to ensure that identification details of the guests are registered in accurate and timely manner documenting the entry and exit of of each person.

“Maintain a current and accurate log of all vehicles and motorcycles entering and departing from the facilities within the jurisdiction of a private security service provider,” the directive stated.

Pointing out,”enure that the cctv and security cameras are in proper working condition and recording of up to date footage’s,”

The authority also directed the security officers in such buildings to maintain occurrence book.

This the authority said will be used to record daily significant incidents and notable events relating to the safety of residents and guests within the premises.

The security officers were however directed that any details collected from the guests will not be used for any other purpose but for identification.

Documents such as identity cards will be returned back to the guests will be handed back to them at the point of exit.
