Tale of resilience : The rise of Nairobi County Director, Josephine Kithu from certificate to PhD

When you first meet Josephine Kithu, it is hard to tell that she has achieved much in educational ladder where many don’t dare once they land a job.

Presently, Kithu is a PhD scholar at Zetech University and a Director at Nairobi City County Government(NCCG).

She us conducting extensive research on the “Effects of Development Control Policies on Strategic Investor Attraction in the Real Estate Sector in Nairobi City County.”

Josephine is among several scholars set to graduate with a PhD in Business Administration, Strategic Management Option.

After years of perseverance and working through difficult circumstances, Ms Kithu is determined to graduate with a PhD in Business Administration, Strategic Management Option,from Zetech University.

She will be among other officers within the county government to attain the prestigious doctoral qualification.

When the WDF act was enacted, Ms Kithu oversaw the smooth implementation of Ward development programmes at the ward level.

Since 2014 Real estate sector has experience tremendous growth driven by urbanization, population growth and demand for residential, commercial and industrial properties.

Kithu’s interest is to assist in addressing significant gaps in the said sector through support of specific objectives like, zoning regulations, licensing regulations, stakeholder engagement policies and Environmental impact assessment requirements.

In this regard, Nairobi City County and other cities across the country can borrow from Josephine Kithu’s scholarly findings and recommendations to address the gaps that have persisted over the years in urban development and investment attraction.

Ms Kithu has more than 19 years of working experience across different regions and departments. She rose from a lower cadre position to the rank of Director, presenting a true picture of dedication, resilience and commitment to public service.

Her journey from certificate level to a PhD, pursued under an unfriendly
working environment, demonstrates how strong faith, determination and focus can propel an individual to greater heights.

Ms Kithu’s Scholarly journey its quite inspiring and encouraging, as she has published several Journals
internationally.

During former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s tenure, Ms Kithu witnessed and contributed to the smooth implementation of programmes within the county government, a period that saw Sonko receive several prestigious awards both locally and internationally.

Among the accolades received were the Leadership Excellence Award, conferred by the United Nations Jewel Howard Taylor Leadership Programe.

International Peace and Governance Council (UNIPGC) Supreme Council, as well as recognition under the Speaking during a recent conference held at the university.

Ms Kithu noted that both the county and the country at large require leaders who can effectively articulate and address emerging issues, especially at a time when most systems and services are increasingly becoming digital.

“I will use the experience I have gathered over many years to assist our country and county to move forward atspeed in digital businesses and solve challenges at first hand,” she said.
