In a developing political rivalry ahead of Kenya’s elections, Mercy Chebet Chelel, an aspirant for the Rongai parliamentary seat, has issued a formal legal demand against her competitor, Tonny Kipkirui Wendot, accusing him of making defamatory statements that damaged her reputation.
According to reports, Chelel’s legal team led by Lawyer Danstan Omari has demanded a public apology and Sh 50 million in compensation for what they describe as malicious and false remarks allegedly made by Wendot during a fundraiser event.
Rongai Constituency in Nakuru County has become a hotbed of political activity, with multiple aspirants vying for the parliamentary position.
Mercy Chebet Chelel has positioned herself as a strong contender, often highlighting her commitment to community development and women’s empowerment.
Wendot, reportedly a Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) employee based in Mombasa, is also actively campaigning.
The conflict escalated when Wendot is accused of uttering statements during a public gathering that Chelel claims were intended to tarnish her image, character, and suitability for the elective post.
While specific details of the alleged remarks have not been fully publicized in all reports, they are said to have touched on personal and professional integrity issues.
Chelel’s advocates have issued a formal demand letter seeking a retraction and unconditional apology to be issued publicly through the same platforms or events where the defamatory statements were made, as well as in local media.
Payment of KSh 50 million for defamation, loss of reputation, and associated emotional distress and further desisting from any further statements or actions that could further defame or malign Chelel’s character.
Failure to comply within the stipulated timeline could lead to the filing of a formal defamation suit in court, where Chelel would seek judicial redress.
