A senior police officer under investigation for the murder of his wife is fighting for his life in the High Dependency Unit at Kenyatta National Hospital, the court heard on Thursday March 19.
Appearing before Makadara Chief Magistrate Hon. Beatrice Kimemia, defence lawyers Danstan Omari and Florence Muigai told the court that Daniel Mburu Macharia underwent emergency surgery on 7 March 2026.
The lawyers said Mburu collapsed while in custody at Kasarani Police Station. Police investigations revealed he had sustained a stab wound to the abdomen during a violent domestic altercation with his 43-year-old wife, Florence Nyagah, whose body was discovered lying in a pool of blood with visible stab injuries on her chest on 1 March 2026 inside their house on Lumumba Drive.
The incident which is believed to have happened between February , 27 and March 1 stemmed from unresolvable domestic dispute.
The suspects since the incident has been bleeding internally making his health situation to be in dire need of intense medical attention.
Omari asked the court for an additional days to allow the suspect to complete treatment and for the transfer of his mental health records from Chiromo Hospital to Kenyatta National Hospital.
He stressed that Mburu’s condition was critical and that uninterrupted medical care was necessary to prevent him from harming himself.
Mburu had earlier told detectives at Naivasha Police Station that his wife attacked him first, forcing him to flee. He is, however, accused of killing Nyagah, who died from multiple stab wounds inflicted by a sharp object.
A post-mortem examination conducted on 2 March 2026 at Kenyatta National Hospital confirmed the cause of death.
Prosecution counsel Gloria Amondi, who is representing the family of the deceased, said she had no objection to granting the suspect more time for treatment but argued that 21 days was excessive, noting that the victim’s family was keenly following the case.
Lead investigator Inspector of Police Wesley Terer was therefore given a further extension to complete investigations, taking into account Mburu’s medical condition.
In her ruling, Magistrate Kimemia noted that the suspect remains in critical condition following surgery and has not been produced in court.
“The prosecution has therefore sought an adjournment of 14 days to allow the respondent sufficient time to recuperate and to enable the finalization of investigations,” she said.
Further, she noted that both parties are in agreement for more additional time to be granted for the suspects recuperation and the completion of investigations.
“Accordingly, I extend the adjournment by 14 days. The matter shall be mentioned on 2 April 2026 for review of the prevailing circumstances and for further directions.”
The magistrate added that Mburu is entitled to the best possible treatment under the circumstances. “No prejudice has been demonstrated as to why these records should not be released to KNH to assist in his treatment. I therefore allow the application,” she ruled.
The case will be mentioned on 2 April 2026.
