Nairobi governor is is at the brink of being impeached days after he surrendered some key functions to the national government in a deal that was signed in State House on February 17, 2026
A section of Members of County Assembly have revived impeachment plans against Sakaja citing that he failed to deliver promises he made in 2022.
The MCAs who spoke after adopting the cooperation agreement between the county and national government said they had identified 22 grounds to send home Sakaja.
“Apart from approving the co-operation agreement, we had an agenda to notify the Clerk to approve the signatures for impeachment, but he was not available,” Chege said.
She added: “We have already notified the Speaker of our intentions and initiated the process of counter-checking the impeachment signatures.”
Last year, attempts to impeach Sakaja failed after he was saved by President Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The MCA had accused him of ignoring the failure by the governor to disburse bursaries and Ward Development Fund.
It is alleged that more than 70 MCAs have already appended the signatures that will pave the way for the preparation of an impeachment motion.
An MCA said there was no need of remaining silent as Nairobi residents suffer without proper services.
“We are tired of kneeling before the governor, CECs and Chief Officer, because they have ignored us the Members. We have resolved to start the process of impeachment and append our signatures so that the residents can be served better,” said the member
Another Ward Rep claimed the governor was working with opponents of sitting MCAs for the 2027 elections noting that he is supposed to coordinate development with elected leaders.
This will be the third initiative by the assembly to impeach the governor with the first one having been coordinated by former Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve who died in April 2025.
Two residents had also petitioned the assembly to impeach the governor but the petitions were thrown out by the speaker.
