How fuel tanker explosion accident occurred in Nairobi’s Southern bypass

The accident occurred on Saturday morning, January 24, 2026 in the near Swaminaraya tunnel bridge.

One person has been reported dead following a fuel tanker explosion accident along the Southern Bypass road in Nairobi.

The accident occurred on Saturday morning, January 24, 2026 in the near Swaminaraya tunnel bridge.

According to witnesses the fuel tanker was trying to avoid a stalled truck on the spot thus losing control hitting another vehicle.

It is stated that crew of the tanker managed to jump from the ill-fated lorry and were rescued and rushed for treatment.

Meanwhile one person was burnt following the explosion that shook the nearby estates.

“The accident occurred around 10am in the morning, wee were awoken by a loud bang from the explosion and we rushed to the scene,” a witness said

Kenya Red cross and police were dispatched to the areas to keep off members of the public from scooping the spilt fuel.
