The National government will now be forced to take over some functions after it emerged that governor Johnson Sakaja could be facing trouble managing Nairobi.

This was revealed by President William Ruto on October 12, 2025 during a church service where he expressed his concerns over the pathetic state of Nairobi.

“Nairobi cannot continue to be the city in the filth, we are in the final stages of the signing of agreement with the private sector on how we are going to clean this city, it cannot continue the way it is,” Ruto said

He added, “Many places in the city are dark, and in such situations goons take advantage of innocent people, Satan likes the darkness,”

Similarly, the Head of State said it was unacceptable that some roads in the capital city were still muddy three years after governor Sakaja was elected.

Sakaja, who was present when President Ruto made the remarks, admitted that he was facing the challenges of running the city, even though he appeared hesitant while explaining the challenges.

“The money to run the city were not enough but we now have a proper plan, when the youth collect the garbage the garbage trucks delays because there is no fuel,” said Sakaja

He added, “we have found the solution and I thank the President because we are collaborating with us,”

While the details of the County and National government collaboration remain scanty, it is understood that Sakaja will be forced to surrender some dockets.

It is understood that an outfit will be formed by the national government to take over cleaning of the city, roads, health and management of revenue.

The new development comes barely two months after governor Sakaja survived an impeachment that was plotted by the Members of the County Assembly.

Sakaja was however, saved by President Ruto and ODM leader who asked the MCAs not to impeach him with both the party leaders promising to hold him accountable.
