It has been three months since some residents moved to Affordable houses in Mukuru slums, Nairobi.
During the launch by President Ruto, several home owners were ushered into the new life from the nearby slums marking a new chapter in their lives.
However, some argue that it is not all rose in the new homes that goes up to 11 floors up.
In an interview with a local daily, one of the residents said that his house was used during the launch by President Ruto but since then he has not been allowed to occupy it.
He said officials at the site have been taking him in circles with claims they will consult to help him get his house back.
Another occupant living in a house located in 8th floor said the lifts have been faulty for two weeks now and that they were promised that they are moving into a fully furnished home.
“We came knowing there are furniture but we they are not there. That is the second challenge we have apart from the non-functional lift,” she said.
Initial plans were that those moving in would find a bed, three-seater sofa, mattress and coffee table.
Another home owner who is a mother of two said that some tenants sell alcohol and bhang in their houses.
“This does not please me, it will lead to lawlessness that we have escaped from the slums and it will destroy our children. The government should check on that,” she said.
Some of the other complaints include water from the boreholes, which tenants claim is salty.
There are two water sources; from the borehole in the compound and from Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company(NCWSC) but both have been merged forcing them to but drinking water.
She asks the government to ensure other tenants get help to get furniture, saying failure to do so has discouraged some from entering the houses despite paying for them.
