There has been a rising number of cases of job seekers landing in the hands of the kidnappers who in turn demand for a ransom, threatening of dire consequences if their demand is not met.
Many have left their homes in search of greener pastures to better their lives and never returned back and such was a case with a 26 years old Mercy Awuor in Nairobi’s Kitisuru estate.
Her family is in agony after she in distress called her husband that the people who had called her for a job opportunity had abducted her and were demanding for a ransom to warrant her freedom.
Awuor who was operating a small business in Kangemi is said to have been living with her husband Brian Andole in Kitisuru
According to the distraught husband, Awuor left home on November 4, 2024 to go meet with the alleged potential employer who is suspected to have abducted her.
In an interview with the local Tv station, Andole recalled that he missed call at about 3:00p.m. “I called back, and she told me they had put her in a white Probox and; she was seeing where it was written Maasai Mara,”
Andole recalled that he got worried and confused at that point. He was forced to contact some of the phone numbers that had been used to reach his wife in vain.
A heartbroken Andole stated that he saw a new number, and a woman was crying before a man told him to send Shb150k or else he will receive a dead body instead.
Andole revealed that he filed a report at Kitisuru Police Station before he was advised to seek help from Kabete Police Station for further action but ended up asking for money from him for which he only had Sh 300.
After he gave out the only money. He was again taken in circles and told to go to Gigiri and unfortunately he did not receive the help he needed.
Additionally, he wondered who will help him trace and rescue his wife whose situation and whereabouts were unknown yet the police whose service is to all seemed to be reluctant and they are paid to do the work.
Awuor’s plight comes barely a week when Nairobi a woman shared on her social handles that she had numerously received text messages informing her that she had been considered for online marketing job which she was required to work only part time.
