Motorists and pedestrians using a section of Mombasa road have raised concerns over the pace of contractor currently on site.

The contractor is working on a section on from the city centre all the way to City Cabanas work which they started sometimes in 2023.

But what has raised concerns is the stretch between Airtel Kenya and General Motors where stagnant waters are slowly ruing the old Mombasa road.

Here the contractor dug a trench a one metre deep on approximately half a kilometer that has been collecting water owing to the heavy rains.

The excavation along the stretch from Sameer Africa towards General Motors.

This has exposed foundation of the old Mombasa road standing on foundation made on loose concrete and soil.

Visibly, compressed soil are slowly falling getting soaked and likely to be eroded in move that is likely to weaken the section of the busy highway.

On the stretch there are no barricade tape to guide motorists on the margin of the road; this makes it dangerous to drive at night.

Ideally, there ought to be other markings to guard vehicles from falling off into the excavation including heavy drums filled with cement and ballast.

However, the marking are placed far apart and some drums have since been knocked down by motorists and due to absence of the markings some motorists have plunged on the excavation.

“The contractor seems to be working on slow pace because nothing much has happened since they arrived on the site, what is worrying they have excavated several spots without proper safety measure,” a motorist lamented.

“Some sections under constructions are very dangerous in case motorist veers of the road, in fact some have plunged in excavation several times,” Leo Muchiri who frequently use the stretch said.

Pedestrians have not been spared, a walkway that was purposely meant for those on foot are frequently edged out of the road by boda-boda riders.
